YOU MATTER

In the past few months, I had several opportunities to write and handsomely paid, it is a huge one to grab, right? Yeah, it is but your baby girl accepted few and humbly rejected many. Surprising????

One of the most important things to me is making good grades, so it is quite unfortunate that those opportunities came while I was preparing for and writing my second semester examination.

Indubitably, accepting all the proposals would affect my academics; these are formal write-ups that require utmost scrutiny and dedication but since I was stuck reading for my examination, they are better off humbly rejected than badly cooked as this might ruin the reputation of my job.

While multitasking can be efficacious in certain circumstances, it is almost impossible to multitask in some others. Accepting the proposals would require certain level of commitment and this, coupled with exam stress might affect my health status, yes! I placed myself, my health before money and right now, I am grateful I did. I truly matter. You too are.

When I grabbed my pen to write this piece, the first question that emerged in my mind was, 'why will someone even think I do not matter?' It is not a gainsaying that most people judge themselves based on others' perception of them; what people think about them matters more than what they think of themselves, if this could 'bless' a sane man with headache, how much wreck do you think would be done to their mental health if they do not rate themselves at all?

Many a time, I have got people question my narcissism (this is in no way related to selfishness); narcissism rules in loving oneself wholly first, simply because one cannot give out what one doesn't have (in short, there is no pouring from an empty jar). It is never a bad idea to share love with people but not at the expense of your own happiness, it is okay to dash our your dresses but he sure you wouldn't have to walk naked after doing so. It is permissible to let go of opportunities that would deter your happiness, you will be doing yourself more good than harm if you place your happiness above other things. You matter!

About others' perception of us, dear reader, it is OK to be imperfect; this is what makes us sapiens, so do not be weighed down by the 'not-so-good' comment(s) about you from people. Just as the world is blessed with many beautiful souls, there exist some other bitter ones; they see the potential in you and thus try to bring you down by circulating obnoxious news about you; news that would pierce your heart. Dear you, worry not, does their hate matter? NO, YOU matter.

Here is another perspective, just about a week ago, I found myself having to choose between maintaining my sanity and letting go of some things, these are things I thou6 I normally cannot do without but surprisingly, here I am being 100%  sane since I dropped 'em; it was a Herculean task giving up on those things but I have had peace of mind since then. You also can try this!

The following twelve-line poem is dedicated to everyone who is striving to get their heads off others' validation;

One, two, three

Just like a tree

They try to cut down my dream

And make me a meme

But I stand tall

Like the Erin-Ijesha fall

Flawed but blessed

Betrayed but not two-faced

I breathe,

Breathe for greatness

No matter the hindrance

I will shine in darkness.

Thanks for reading.
